We have been living with my in-laws now for about a week-and-a-half. [Insert jokes here]
In all seriousness, it took some adjusting, and that first week was not the most fun. There were boxes everywhere, over-tired children screeching and running laps, then there were the adults… we needed sleep and some wine, but we managed to make it through in one piece! We are not sharing some mansion, so space has been the biggest issue. They have a three bedroom house with two bathrooms, so we had to make some concessions to fit everyone and everything we needed. They gave us two rooms and a bathroom, which was so awesome of them to do. The first few days, we just had one bedroom because the second was still an office, but now we’ve been able to get that one cleared out, too. Trevor and I have our room with the necessities only: our bed (box springs and mattress- no frame), Trevor’s old dresser & makeshift nightstands. Our closet houses one more dresser, and we do have our TV in there. Cable and DVR are coming next week in our room, which will also be nice to have.
Knox’s room is basically just like his last one. We opted to put him in the former office so that his transition would be super easy. We took his bed, dresser, etc. and set things up very similar to his last room. The kid hasn’t missed a beat! He has given up naps entirely now, but the upside of that is that he is asleep literally within three minutes of laying down at night. We put all of the boys’ toys in that room, and Brody’s dresser is in the closet along with all of their hanging clothes. It’s basically a room for them both, only Brody co-sleeps with us, just like he always has done. So far so good. It’s interesting to share a bathroom with three boys, but at least two of them are very small! We share a living space and kitchen with Trevor’s parents, so we’ve had to decide how to split cooking/ grocery shopping, but I think we’re in a rhythm now.
There are obvious stresses involved with living with anyone, especially family. However, we know that this short period of time (relatively short, anyway… remind me of that in a few months!) is well-worth it. We are able to save a whole lot of money, and the boys absolutely love it. Brody is in heaven following his Geepa (or “Poo-PAH!” as he calls him) all day long and going outside every. five. minutes. and Trevor’s mom (“Mimi”) is so much help with both boys, so there are some big positives here!
Speaking of outside, we are spending a lot of time outdoors. What the house lacks in open space, the yard more than makes up for. We have never had a yard for the boys to use at our house, so that has been awesome for our family! The boys are thrilled, and Brody tells us “out!” so many times, it’s pretty absurd. I’m pretty sure he’d live outside if we’d allow it (I think they frown on that sort of thing, though, right?). I took the camera outside this weekend and captured some of the afternoon, including Knox and Brody’s first times in the pond.
Our house will be located next to the other pond across from the one Trevor’s parents live on- his grandparents (their property is visible in the pictures of Trevor holding Brody in the pond) own the pond we’ll be adjacent to. Just being outside on such a nice weekend reminded us even more strongly WHY we are doing this move: it’s for our family’s future. We will have the space we need and crave, and our boys will be able to grow up in a beautiful space, full of the things that little boys need: room to run, trees to climb, water to swim & fish in and family all around them. It doesn’t get much better than that for a little boy! We are feeling hopeful and excited for what this new season will bring!
